Ian Dunhill

Senior Advisor on Bathing Waters, Environment Agency

Ian has been working for the Environment Agency for over 25 years in a variety of roles mostly involved with understanding sources of microbial pollution to the sea. Prior to this he worked as a Seismologist. He holds a MSc in Environmental Protection and a BSc in Applied Geology.

During his time in the Environment Agency he has worked in several operational teams surveying water quality at some of England’s most popular beaches. He now is the national lead for bathing waters, bridging the gap between policy makers and practitioners. His day-to-day work involves the resolution of problems related to bathing waters, together with horizon scanning for future issues and commissioning research to address these. He’s represented the Environment Agency to the European Commission and in the High Court. He currently sits on the UK Bathing & Shellfish Waters Technical Advisory Group.
