Dr Hesham M Al-Mekhlafi

Associate Professor, Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya

Hesham Al-Mekhlafi received his BSc degree in Medical Laboratory Science from Sana’a University (Yemen), MSc from the National University of Malaysia, and MAppStat and PhD in Public Health (2009) from the University of Malaya (Malaysia). He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer (2009 – 2012) and then promoted to Associate Professor (2012–2016) in the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. He joined the Medical Research Centre of Jazan University in 2016 and he is at present the advisor to the Deanship of Scientific Research, Jazan University, Saudi Arabia.

Hesham’s research focuses on the epidemiology and control of malaria and neglected tropical diseases, including soil-transmitted helminthiasis, schistosomiasis and leishmaniasis as well as other protozoan and helminth parasites. This led him to lead research projects in Malaysia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and many other countries, publishing more than 120 peer-reviewed articles.

He is a reviewer for many international journals, including being an Associate Editor for the Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
