RSTMH is a member society which has been dedicated to improving tropical medicine and global health since 1907.
The society is committed to serving the long-term goals of researchers’ career development by facilitating scholarly communication and providing mentoring, funding and awards. RSTMH journals are fundamental to this mission and to ensure they remain impactful and timely, the society needs editorial board members to advise on their development.
About International Health
International Health is an official journal of RSTMH. It publishes original, peer-reviewed articles and reviews on all aspects of global health including the social and economic aspects of communicable and non-communicable diseases, health systems research, policy and implementation, and the evaluation of disease control programmes and healthcare delivery solutions.
The journal aims to stimulate scientific and policy debate and provide a forum for analysis and opinion sharing for individuals and organisations engaged in all areas of global health.
Purpose of the role
The purpose of the Editorial Advisory Board is to assist RSTMH in defining the strategic direction of the journals, and to actively promote them to colleagues in the field. The core function of the role will be to provide advice to the journals' Manging Editor and Editors-in-Chief on how the publication should be developed, with the long-term aim of raising the journals' profile within the field.
Members will be expected to act as an advocate for the journals, as well as suggesting commissioning opportunities and ideas to RSTMH.
Each member of the Editorial Advisory Board will represent a subdiscipline within the field of tropical medicine or global health, with a particular emphasis on covering RSTMH's priority thematic areas of focus.
The Editorial Advisory Board will not usually meet formally; however, members will be expected to be available for quarterly phone calls with the Managing Editor and willing to meet RSTMH informally at conferences.
- To act as an advocate for the journal, actively promoting it to potential and existing authors and readers;
- To feed into and provide feedback on the RSTMH strategy for the journal and assigned thematic area;
- To provide feedback and advice on community perception of the journal and suggest improvements for consideration by the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief;
- To provide advice to potential authors on the writing and submission of papers to the journal;
- To submit some of their own best work to the journal (at least one manuscript per year);
- A willingness to provide commissioning support to the journal;
- To propose topics and articles to the Managing Editor for commissioning (including potential authors);
- To suggest ideas for special issues and series or collections of articles and act as guest editor for a special issue, as appropriate;
- To act as referees for the journal and to recommend new referees, as required;
- To occasionally assist RSTMH in making decisions on submissions (either prior to or following peer review) if an appropriate Associate Editor cannot be assigned;
- Keep RSTMH up to date with relevant meetings, key papers and new developments.
This appointment will initially be for three years. Since the role is fundamentally important to the quality and timeliness of scholarly communication, we would be grateful for early warning of a change in circumstances.
