Dr Samson Kiware

Principal Research Scientist, Ifakara Health Institute (IHI)

Dr. Samson Kiware is a data scientist and mathematical modeler with a Ph.D. in Computational Sciences. He is a Principal Research Scientist at the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and holds courtesy appointments as Research Assistant Professor at Marquette University and Adjunct Professor at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology.

Dr. Kiware has made significant contributions to the field of vector control and data-driven public health initiatives. He developed MosquitoDB, an electronic database for managing entomological data, and provides data management and analysis support for National Malaria Programs across sub-Saharan Africa. He developed Vector Control Optimization Model (VCOM) which can be used to assess the impact of various vector control tools.

Committed to strengthening local capacity, Dr. Kiware is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a project aimed at strengthening Sustainable Modelling Capacity in Tanzania. He also serves as Co-Principal Investigator for the Wellcome Trust-funded Modelling for Decisions in a Dynamic Africa (MoDD Africa) project, which explores the effects of climate change on malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. He is the Principal Investigator the AnoSTEP AfriKa project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, focusing on assessing the biology and public health importance of Anopheles stephensi in Africa.

Dr. Kiware is a strong advocate for integrating malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) programs to drive coordinated disease control and elimination. He is also a member of the NTD modelling consortium. As a member of Tanzania’s Vector Control Technical Working Group, he contributes to national efforts in vector management and policy development.
