Michael Kirumba

Michael Kirumba is Deputy Director of Accelerate, a Sightsavers global programme whose objective is to accelerate elimination of trachoma as a public health problem in 14 African countries.
He studied public health at the University of Liverpool and has over 20 years of experience supporting governments, civil society organisations and communities in public health, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and Disability Inclusion initiatives in 29 countries in Eastern, Western, Central and Southern Africa regions. Michael has contributed significantly to key strategy and policy-formulation initiatives with national committees for eye health and NTDs; the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) – where he was recognised for his contributions to capacity building for eye health in West Africa; the defunct WHO African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (WHO-APOC) as well as global coordination initiatives including the NGDO Group for Onchocerciasis Elimination, the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC) and the NGDO Neglected Tropical Diseases Network (NNN). Michael has contributed to research and learning initiatives to enhance evidence on trachoma elimination, WASH-NTD and disability inclusion.
