Developing partnerships at ASTMH 2024
Last month, a few of us from the RSTMH team were incredibly lucky to be able to attend the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) Annual Meeting 2025 meeting in New Orleans. Having not attended the meeting for a few years it was a great opportunity to reconnect with the event, meet with many of our current members, Fellows and partners, and explore new relationships.
The meeting was delivered on 13 - 17 November, over five days and we were there as exhibitors as well as attendees. The incredible opening address was delivered by Dr Monique Wasunna, Africa Ambassador for Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), and was an inspiring look at her career and achievements.
This was followed by other opening talks and medal and award presentations, as well as an amazing jazz band welcoming us all into the main exhibition space for the opening reception. As always, the meeting was then packed with talks and discussions on a variety of scientific topics of tropical medicine and global health across the days and many tracks.
Tom Pinfield, our Managing Editor and Dr Boakye Boatin, Deputy EIC of our scientific journals Transactions, were there to talk about our scientific journals and about our exciting new opportunities including the Special Collection on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Global Health. As we had a stand at the event we were able to also speak with a number of our members and Fellows, and hear their thoughts on RSTMH as we are about to enter the second full year of our current strategy.
The event also provided an opportunity for me to meet with the Director of ASTMH, Jamie Bay Nishi. It was a great chance to talk to Jamie about our shared successes, challenges and ambitions for RSTMH and ASTMH. Having enjoyed a long partnership over many years, including our shared medal, the Donald Mackay Medal, we also explored some other exciting opportunities to work together on some other activities in the coming year.
