Second Anniversary of the Khartoum Call for Action on Mycetoma

This article collection is in recognition of the second anniversary of the Khartoum Call for Action on Mycetoma, which took place in February 2019.

Mycetoma is a chronic disease usually of the foot, but any part of the body can be affected. Infection is most probably acquired by traumatic inoculation of certain fungi or ‎bacteria into the subcutaneous tissue. The disease commonly affects young adults in developing countries, with people of low socioeconomic status and manual workers such as agriculturalists, labourers and herdsmen being the worst affected.

Accurate data on its incidence and prevalence are not available. However, early detection and treatment are important to reduce morbidity and improve treatment outcomes.

Many of the current diagnostic tests and techniques are invasive, expensive, lengthy and have low specificity and sensitivity. Importantly, they are not available in endemic regions and, in most cases, people must spend hours – even days – travelling to reach the nearest provincial hospital where these facilities are accessible.

In April, we will publish a special issue covering mycetoma. To mark the second anniversary of the call to action, we highlight some of the articles, which will be included in this special, issue in this advanced collection.
