This month’s Editor’s Choice article is a scoping review by a Keona J H Blanks and colleagues, which examines neonatal emollient therapy and massage practices in Africa. Their work highlights the value of these approaches for improving skin barrier function and preventing serious infections and mortality, whilst at the same time reducing the risk of the development of disability in fine motor skills and hearing disability. Further studies and implementation research are required to establish the effectiveness and feasibility of widescale use of these practices and the impact of emollient therapy in Sub Saharan Africa.
