World Leprosy Day: Article collection

Leprosy (also known as Hansen’s disease) is a bacterial infection caused by the slow-growing bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and mainly affects the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose. If left untreated, it can cause permanent damage to these tissues.

This Sunday 30 January is World Leprosy Day. This international day is an opportunity to celebrate people who have experienced leprosy, raise awareness of the disease, and call for an end to leprosy-related stigma and discrimination.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “United for Dignity”, which is calling for unity in honouring the dignity of people who have experienced leprosy. The campaign honours the lived experiences of individuals who have experienced leprosy by sharing their empowering stories and advocating for mental wellbeing and the right to a dignified life free from disease-related stigma.
