Professor Akinsanya Olayide Osibogun
Akinsanya Olayide Osibogun, Professor of Community Health at the University of Lagos, holds the MBBS (1980), MPH (1984) and MD (2020) degrees from the University of Lagos, Columbia University, New York and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria respectively. He is a Fellow by examination, of the National Postgraduate Medical college of Nigeria, FMCPH (1989), and West African College of Physicians FWACP (1994). He was awarded the Dr Sogbetun Prize as the most outstanding FMCPH graduand (1989).
He received an International Fellowship to the Andrija Stampar School of Public Health, University of Zagreb, Croatia (1993) and a Visiting Fellowship to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine Epidemiology Programme (1994). He was a Member, WHO Working Group on Improving the Performance of Health Centres, 1993-1997. He was awarded the Dr Moses Majekodunmi Prize for distinguished public health service by the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria, (2012).
Prof Osibogun, among other strategic assignments, has served or is serving as:
- Coordinator of the Community-Based Medical Education and Services Programme, and Member of University Senate, Ogun State University from 1990-1995
- Head Department of Community Health, College of Medicine University of Lagos, 2001-2006; He has been Chairman of the Honours Committee of the sewnate, university of Lagos since 2022.
- Special Consultant to the Honorable Minister of Health, Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1998-1999
- Short Term Consultant/ Temporary Adviser , Division of Health System Strengthening, World Health Organization, Geneva, Various Dates between 1993-2003
- Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Oct 2006-Oct 2014
- Chairman, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Jan 2020-Jan 2023
- Team Lead, The Health Thematic Group, Nigeria National Development Plan, 2021-2025
- Executive Director, NCD Alliance Nigeria, Jan 2020 till date
- President, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, 1st Jan 2022 till 31st December 2023.
He is a member of several reputable national and international professional organizations into which he has been elected on merit, including: New York Academy of Science, International Society for Infectious Diseases, American Public Health Association, Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria, Nigerian Medical Association, Nigerian Academy of Medicine, Nigerian Academy of Medicine Specialties, The Royal Society for Public Health, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.
Prof Osibogun has been the recipient of research grants including a WHO grant for a Study on Improving the Performance of Health Centres within the Context of District Health Systems, 1993 – 94, WHO Towards Unity for Health Research Grant, 2001. He was the Team Lead of Research Pillar of the COVID19 response in Lagos State providing evidence for control actions and recently led a national survey to monitor for safety signals in COVID19 vaccinees in Nigeria (2022). The Leguru Health Insurance Society which he initiated in Ogun State in 1996 as part of a translational research project, remains a model for Community-Based Health Financing in Africa and provided the template for the current Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme.
He remains committed to nurturing the next generation of researchers and healthcare professionals as evident in his supervision of over 100 postgraduate successful Masters/Medical Fellows/PhD mentees. He has over 160 publications in scientific journals and continues to engage in research.
