Winning essay
The winning essay was by Will Matupi (pictured right), from The University of Notingham, for his essay titled ‘Programs for Pathology: Improving Health Outcomes for LMICs in the Artificial Intelligence Paradigm’.
I am delighted to accept this award for my essay. Writing was an immensely rewarding experience, giving me the opportunity to express my views on such a critical topic and explore new ideas. I am thrilled that others enjoyed reading it as well."
Will Matupi
Explaining his essay and what inspired him to write it, he said: “I was inspired to write this essay through my dual Interest in Medicine and International Politics, and how an understanding of both can advance Global Health in a way that benefits all.
“The framework for this essay is grounded in the development principles established by the late Paul Farmer, one of the founders of Partners In Health. I first encountered the organisation several years ago after watching the documentary ‘Bending the Arc’, and the ideas and approaches presented in it have resonated with me ever since.
“I was also inspired by my personal connection to Malawi, where half of my family resides, and the United Kingdom, where myself and the other half live. Artificial intelligence will be a defining moment for healthcare systems in both societies. Politics will decide whether it drives progress or deepens divides.”
Our Student Essay Prize in an annual award and will open again for applications towards the end of the year.
