International Health: Volume 15, Issue 6, November 2023

15 Nov 2023

International Health is a fully Open Access journal which launched in 2009. The journal welcomes submissions on all aspects of global health, including the social and economic aspects of both infectious and non-communicable diseases, health systems research, policy and implementation, and the evaluation of disease control programmes and healthcare delivery solutions.

A highlight this month is a new paper by Zeleke et al., which is one the few studies to report on the readiness of the vaccine pharmacovigilance (VP) system used by designated health facilities to implement active surveillance for vaccine –related adverse events following immunization (AEFI).

As the authors say, no vaccine is 100% safe and both passive and active surveillance for AEFIs is needed. This is true for the vaccines currently in use but will be even more critical as new vaccines are introduced. The authors outline some of the main issues associated with VP systems in Ethiopia, provide recommendations to improve the situation, and, in doing so, highlight why it is important that health systems understand and address the barriers that preclude optimal AEFI surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa.
