Transactions of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (TRSTMH) was founded in 1908 and offers a respected voice for clinicians, health-related scientists, development organisations and students.

This month’s Editor’s Choice article is a paper by Victor O Magero and colleagues, who explore the distribution of the schistosome intermediate snail host Biomphalaria pfeifferi in East Africa’s River systems and determine the prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infection. Regular surveys of the river systems for snail intermediate hosts, followed by molecular detection of schistosome infection, could form a basis for the development of a prompt and cost-effective surveillance system for schistosomiasis in the region, ultimately facilitating better prevention and control strategies for human schistosomiasis.
