International Health: Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2024
International Health is a fully Open Access journal which welcomes submissions on all aspects of global health, including the social and economic aspects of both infectious and non-communicable diseases, health systems research, policy and implementation, and the evaluation of disease control programmes and healthcare delivery solutions.
This month’s Editor’s Choice article is a paper by a previous RSTMH Early Career Grant awardee, R.N. Chweya. In their work, they used spatial and network mapping to explore the comorbidity of trachoma with visual- impairing NCDs in a pastoralist community in Kenya.
With an estimated 50 million nomadic pastoralists in Africa, it is important to understand and identify pathways of trachoma and NCD co-occurrence and interactions among these communities, who are among the most “hard-to-reach” populations for health-service delivery.
Chweya et al., revealed a twin trachoma- NCD burden that is higher among elderly pastoralists, with 26% of the study population with trachoma also having hypertension and 0,01 % with diabetes. The findings here support the need for integrated interventions which address NTDs and NCD in these underserved populations. It is also pertinent to point out that community-directed initiatives and “One Health” approaches would also offer solutions to increase health service uptake and better health outcomes, contributing to Universal Health Coverage and addressing SDG 3.
