The Soulsby Foundation travelling fellowships: apply for up to £20,000 funding
The Soulsby Foundation is offering travel fellowships to medical or veterinary graduates who propose an impactful project within the international field of One Health’.
Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior (1926-2017)
Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior, former veterinary surgeon to the Queen, and Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
He was the only individual to have served as President of both the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (1984-1985) and the Royal Society of Medicine (1998-2000), as well as the only member of his profession in the House of Lords.
During his career, he transformed the science of parasitology in at least two major academic departments – in Cambridge and Pennsylvania – and was regularly called upon to advise governments and academic bodies throughout the world including in Africa, Australia, Grenada, Mexico, Sri Lanka and the USA, as well as international bodies such as WHO and the UN. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene for over six decades, joining in 1955.
In 2015, Lord Soulsby was awarded the Queen’s Medal by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for his ‘outstanding lifetime contribution’ to juxtaposing the worlds of medical and veterinary science.
The Soulsby travelling fellowships
Lord Soulsby, who died in May 2017, left an important legacy to both veterinary and human medicine and it is fitting that his colleagues, friends and family joined together to honour him, and that legacy, in establishing the Soulsby Foundation.
Soulsby Fellowships will be granted to medical or veterinary graduates who propose an impactful project within the international field of ‘One Health’.
Up to two Soulsby Fellowships will be awarded each year through a competitive application process. Fellowships are between £10,000 and £20,000 in value, and are intended to cover travel and subsistence expenses when carrying out the project.

The application process for Soulsby Fellowships is now open and the deadline for submissions is midnight (GMT) on 31 December 2017.
Applicants for a Soulsby Fellowship should:
- Hold a degree in either human or veterinary medicine,
- Be affiliated with a biomedically relevant UK or US academic institution (the Affiliated Institution),
- Be seeking to conduct a project, normally overseas, in a field related to ‘One Health’ and be able to describe the project, and its potential outcomes and impact, in detail.
